Too Late to Start My Book?

January 25, 2018

Jill DeWit

It is over three weeks into 2018 and I am fairly confident that I am not alone with my tardiness beginning my goals for this year.

Honestly, I am very tardy but for a good reason. That is subjective since I subscribe to the belief that we are putting things off for a reason and we can all find time if we really are committed.

Last summer my partner Jack (Butala) and I attended a podcast convention in Anaheim, CA. We set out on a three-day adventure hoping to learn from the best. Having only been producing our own podcast show for 2-1/2 years, we assumed the event would be filled with serious podcast rock stars and hoped we would be in the intermediate echelon.

Boy were we wrong.

At the time, we had over 525 podcasts and most of the attendees only had a handful of shows and even more had not begun to record. We were partially overjoyed to find out how much we really knew about podcasting and how far ahead we were of the competition – and partially disappointed as we took the time off to attend and were having trouble seeing the value in the event.

What does this have to do with starting a book?

At the event there were exhibitors displaying their products and services to attendees. It was there I met a woman who self-published a few of her own books, proved herself successful at marketing, and now provides a service to aid authors in getting books out of their heads and in print or online sales. I had been already dragging my feet for over a year at this point so I decided to act and force myself to commit. I paid $5,000 and walked away excited and happy.

Fast forward to now. I ignored phone calls and messages from my assigned editor for months. I told myself I was too busy building up several companies that service our Land Academy members. In reality, I was not motivated and not taking the time.

#STAYMOTIVATED

I like to think I have a lot of energy. The people around me say I do. (All the time, actually.) But what I am spending my time on is not always the correct tasks. It is easy to get side tracked on what one thinks is a very important project when the reality is they might be spinning their wheels on something immaterial and not working on important matters.

I am good at motivating, I am good at pushing myself, I just needed to redirect my focus back to what I want to conquer this year.

And that is writing and publishing my first book.

Last night I completed the outline and I am nervously waiting to hear what my writing coach has to say. Now that I have started the process I can’t wait to dive in. Sometimes getting started and taking that first step is the hardest part.

(I promise to share more about my book soon!)
